Cartridge vs. Sand vs. DE Filters
All three remove particles from pool water, but they do it differently, need different maintenance and use very different amounts of water. In a region where water matters, that last point deserves weight.
Cartridge Filters
Pleated elements trap debris as water passes through. They filter finer than sand, require no backwashing — which saves a meaningful amount of water each year — and are the most common choice on newer residential pools here. Maintenance means removing and rinsing the elements a few times a year, and replacing them every few years.
Sand Filters
Water passes through a bed of filter sand. They are the simplest to operate and the most forgiving of neglect, but they filter the coarsest of the three, and backwashing sends a substantial volume of water to waste each time. Media eventually channels or calcifies and needs replacing.
DE Filters
Grids coated in diatomaceous earth deliver the finest filtration available, producing noticeably crisp water. The tradeoff is more involved maintenance: backwashing, recharging with fresh DE and periodic grid cleaning and inspection.
Choosing for a Bakersfield Pool
- Water conservation favors cartridge, which needs no backwash
- Best clarity favors DE, if you accept the maintenance
- Lowest maintenance effort favors sand, at the cost of filtration quality
- Filter size matters as much as type — undersized filters clog quickly regardless
Sizing Is the Overlooked Part
An oversized filter is almost always better than an undersized one: longer intervals between cleanings, lower operating pressure and less strain on the pump. When a customer is cleaning cartridges monthly, the problem is usually the filter's capacity, not the customer.
