Why Bakersfield Pools Turn Green During Summer
Algae needs three things: water, sunlight and an absence of effective sanitizer. Bakersfield summers supply the first two abundantly, so the entire fight comes down to whether your chlorine is working — which is not the same as whether chlorine is present.
The Sequence
It usually goes like this. Temperatures hit triple digits, chlorine demand climbs, and the existing dose no longer holds through the week. Meanwhile, evaporation concentrates cyanuric acid and calcium in the water. Then somebody reduces pump run time to cut the electric bill. Within days there is a haze, then a green tint on the steps, and by the weekend the whole pool has turned.
The Stabilizer Trap
This is the part most owners miss. Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from UV, but too much of it holds chlorine so tightly that it stops sanitizing effectively. A pool can read 3 ppm free chlorine and still grow algae because that chlorine is chemically unavailable. Since stabilizer only leaves through dilution, and summer evaporation concentrates it further, pools drift into this state precisely when the heat is worst.
Run Time Is Not Optional
Chemicals do nothing where water does not move. A variable-speed pump running longer at low speed usually costs less to operate than a short high-speed schedule and delivers far better turnover. Cutting hours during the hottest weeks of the year is the most expensive savings available.
Preventing It
- Have cyanuric acid tested and drain partially if it is high
- Maintain full daily turnover through summer
- Keep the filter clean — pressure, not the calendar, decides
- Brush steps, corners and shaded areas weekly
- Do not stretch service intervals in July and August
