Pool Light Is Not Working
A dark pool light is sometimes just a failed lamp — and sometimes an electrical warning. Because the fixture sits in water on a bonded electrical system, this is one repair we ask homeowners to leave alone.
Likely Causes
Bulb or LED at end of life
The simplest cause, and common on older incandescent fixtures.
Tripped GFCI or breaker
A GFCI that trips when the light is switched on indicates a fault, not a nuisance. Do not bypass it.
Water intrusion in the fixture
A failed lens gasket lets water reach the lamp and contacts, causing failure and often GFCI trips.
Corroded wiring in the niche or conduit
Age and moisture degrade conductors behind the fixture.
Transformer failure
Low-voltage systems depend on a transformer that can fail on its own.
Automation or relay fault
The lighting circuit is never switched on by the controller.
What You Can Safely Check
- Check whether the GFCI or breaker has tripped
- Try switching the light circuit at the panel as well as the app
- Note whether other circuits on the same breaker also fail
When to Call a Professional
Any repeated GFCI trip, visible moisture in the fixture, or a light that failed along with other symptoms needs a professional. We pull the fixture, inspect the niche and wiring, and verify the circuit before returning it to service.
Safety: Never work on pool lighting with the pool in use, and never bypass a GFCI. This is a genuine electrocution risk.
