Pool Pump Leaking Water
Where a pump leaks tells you what failed. A drip between the motor and the wet end is a different repair than water at a union, and one of them will destroy the motor if ignored.
Likely Causes
Shaft seal failure
Water dripping from the gap between motor and pump housing means the mechanical shaft seal has failed. Left running, that water enters the motor and takes out the bearings.
Lid o-ring
Water weeping at the lid is usually a dry, cracked or pinched o-ring — the cheapest pump leak there is.
Union or threaded fitting leaks
Union o-rings harden with heat and age; threaded PVC connections crack when overtightened or sun-degraded.
Cracked pump housing or volute
Usually from freeze damage, impact or age. This requires replacement of the affected part.
Drain plug seals
Plugs removed for winter and reinstalled without fresh sealing surfaces commonly weep.
What You Can Safely Check
- Dry the area, run the pump and watch where water reappears first
- Note whether the leak occurs only while running (pressure side) or also when off
- Check for rust streaks or water tracking into the motor
- Inspect union nuts and drain plugs for moisture
When to Call a Professional
A shaft seal leak should be addressed promptly — it is a moderate repair before the motor fails and a full replacement afterward. Any leak reaching the motor or electrical connections needs immediate attention.
Safety: Do not touch a wet motor or its wiring. Turn the breaker off first.
