Why Your Pool Pump Is Making Noise

Pumps are not silent, but they are consistent. A new noise is information, and the type of noise narrows the cause considerably.

    Likely Causes

    Screeching or growling

Almost always failing motor bearings. It gets progressively louder and ends with a seized motor.

    Rattling or gravel sound

Debris in the impeller or a loose mounting. Small stones drawn through the system make an unmistakable rattle.

Loud vibration or humming through the pad

Cavitation from restricted suction — the pump is trying to pull more water than the line can deliver.

    Humming without spinning

A failed start capacitor or a seized shaft. The motor is drawing current with no rotation, which can burn the windings.

    Air-related gurgling

Suction-side air being pulled into the basket and pushed through the impeller.

    What You Can Safely Check

    • Identify when the noise started and whether it changes with pump speed
    • Empty baskets and check for debris in the basket area
    • Feel whether the motor housing is unusually hot
    • Watch the pump basket for visible air

    When to Call a Professional

Bearing noise and humming-without-starting both need service now. Bearings do not recover, and repeatedly energizing a motor that will not spin frequently converts a capacitor repair into a motor replacement.

Safety: Shut the pump off at the breaker if it is humming without turning or smells hot.
