Pool Filter Pressure Is Too Low
Low pressure sounds like good news and rarely is. If pressure dropped and the returns got weaker at the same time, the pump is not moving the water it should — the problem is upstream of the filter.
Likely Causes
Clogged skimmer or pump basket
Restricted suction reduces the volume reaching the filter, dropping pressure and flow together.
Clogged impeller
Debris in the impeller is one of the most common causes of low pressure with weak returns.
Low water level
Air entering the skimmer reduces flow and produces erratic pressure.
Suction-side air leak
Air in the system reduces pumping efficiency and shows as low, fluctuating pressure with bubbles in the basket.
Failing pump or wrong speed setting
A worn impeller, failing motor or a variable-speed pump running too slowly all deliver less flow.
Faulty pressure gauge
Gauges fail, often reading zero or sticking. Verify the gauge before chasing a phantom problem.
What You Can Safely Check
- Compare pressure with return jet strength — both weak points upstream
- Empty all baskets and check the water level
- Look for air bubbles in the pump basket or returns
- Tap the gauge and see whether the needle responds
When to Call a Professional
Persistent low pressure with weak flow after clearing baskets usually means an impeller obstruction, a suction line restriction or a pump nearing failure. Those need eyes on the equipment.
