Pool Return Jets Are Weak
Return jet strength is a quick, useful flow gauge. When it drops, something between the skimmer and the returns is restricting flow — and the filter pressure reading tells you which side to look at.
Likely Causes
Dirty filter
Weak returns with high filter pressure means the restriction is at the filter.
Suction-side restriction
Weak returns with low pressure means the pump is not receiving enough water: baskets, impeller or suction line.
Variable-speed pump running low
Sometimes there is no fault at all — the schedule simply has the pump at a low RPM.
Partially closed valve
Return-side valves throttled during a prior service and never reopened.
Eyeball fittings
Missing, damaged or misaimed return fittings change apparent jet strength and pool circulation patterns.
Failing pump
A worn impeller or declining motor delivers steadily less flow over time.
What You Can Safely Check
- Read the filter gauge and compare to the clean baseline
- Check whether a variable-speed pump is in a low-speed schedule
- Empty baskets and inspect for debris
- Verify valve positions
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the filter and baskets does not restore flow, we diagnose the whole loop — impeller, suction line, valves and pump performance.
