Pool pH Is Too High
Above about 7.8, chlorine loses a large share of its killing power and calcium starts coming out of solution. High pH is the most common chemistry problem we find on Bakersfield pools, and it usually has a cause worth identifying.
Likely Causes
Salt chlorine generators
Salt systems inherently drive pH upward as they produce chlorine.
High total alkalinity
Alkalinity is the buffer; when it is too high, pH keeps drifting back up no matter how much acid is added.
Aeration from features
Waterfalls, spillovers, spa jets and even aggressive return aiming outgas carbon dioxide and raise pH.
New plaster curing
Fresh plaster releases alkalinity into the water for weeks, pushing pH up daily.
Hard fill water
Local fill water is hard and often alkaline, so every top-off nudges pH upward.
What You Can Safely Check
- Test pH and total alkalinity together — alkalinity usually explains persistent pH drift
- Note whether water features run frequently
- Look for scale forming at the waterline
When to Call a Professional
If pH keeps returning high within days of correction, alkalinity or aeration is driving it and the fix is to address that, not to keep adding acid. We correct the buffer first.
Safety: Never mix pool chemicals, and add acid to water rather than water to acid. Store chemicals separately.
