Total alkalinity is the shock absorber for pH. When it is low, pH bounces — high one day, low the next — and no amount of pH adjustment holds because there is nothing buffering the water.
Likely Causes
Excess acid additions
Muriatic acid lowers alkalinity along with pH. Repeated acid dosing depletes the buffer.
Trichlor chlorination
Acidic tablets erode alkalinity continuously over a season.
Rain and fresh fill
Dilution with low-alkalinity water lowers the reading.
Recent drain and refill
Fresh water often needs alkalinity adjustment before the pool is stable.
What You Can Safely Check
- Test total alkalinity along with pH — reading either alone is misleading
- Note whether pH has been unstable week to week
- Check for surface etching or corrosion, signs of aggressive water
