Air Bubbles in the Pool Pump Basket
Air in the pump basket is always a suction-side problem. Somewhere between the pool and the pump impeller, the system is drawing air instead of water — and unlike a pressure-side leak, you will not see water on the ground.
Likely Causes
Low water level
The skimmer pulls air whenever the water drops near the bottom of the opening. Check this first.
Pump lid o-ring
Dry, cracked or improperly seated o-rings are the single most frequent air source.
Loose drain plugs
Small plugs on the pump body seal poorly once their o-rings age.
Union o-rings on the suction side
Hardened union seals draw air continuously without dripping water.
Cracked pump housing or lid
Hairline cracks are easy to miss and let air in under suction.
Valve stem leaks
Suction-side diverter valves can pull air past a worn stem seal.
What You Can Safely Check
- Confirm water level is at least halfway up the skimmer
- Remove, clean and lubricate the pump lid o-ring, then reseat the lid squarely
- Check drain plugs for snugness
- Watch the returns: bubbles at the jets confirm air is passing through the system
When to Call a Professional
If the lid, water level and plugs are ruled out, the leak is at a union, valve or underground line. Persistent air reduces flow, can cause cavitation damage and shortens pump life, so it is worth tracking down properly.
