pH vs. Alkalinity: What's the Difference?

    These two readings are related, constantly confused, and correcting them in the wrong order is why so many pool owners feel like they are adding chemicals every week with nothing to show for it.

    pH Is a Position

    pH measures how acidic or basic the water currently is. Most pools should sit between 7.4 and 7.6. Below that, water becomes aggressive and corrodes plaster, grout and metal components. Above about 7.8, chlorine's disinfecting power falls off sharply and calcium starts leaving solution as scale.

    Alkalinity Is Resistance

    Total alkalinity measures the water's buffering capacity — how strongly it resists a change in pH. Around 80 to 120 ppm is typical. When alkalinity is too low, pH swings dramatically on small additions and nothing holds. When it is too high, pH is stubborn and drifts upward no matter how much acid you add.

    Fix Alkalinity First

    This is the practical takeaway. If pH will not stay put, adjusting pH is treating the symptom. Bring total alkalinity into range, allow the water to circulate and stabilize, then fine-tune pH. Pools where this order is respected need far less chemical over a season than pools where pH is chased weekly.
